Rolling Walkers, Rollators and Walkers
Shopping for a Walker or Rollator can be a confusing process. There are many different models, features and configurations to choose from, but finding the right Mobility Aid should not be a frustrating task.
Walkers Vs. Rollators (Rolling Walkers)
Rollators, also known as Rolling Walkers, and traditional Walkers play different roles. One should consider the user's lifestyle, strength and overall mobility.
Rollators for on the go…
Rollators (Rolling Walkers) replace the tips of walker legs with wheels. The addition of wheels allow for greater mobility. Every Rollator comes with locking hand breaks. Just like bicycle hand breaks, Rollators (Rolling Walkers) users can slow their forward momentum by depressing the break. Generally, these hand breaks also lock to restrict movement. It's worth noting, Rollators rely on it's users to push; they have no batteries or engines. Most 4-Wheel Rollators include a built in seat and basket.
Walkers for a little more support…
Traditional Walkers have 4 legs providing sturdy support to their users. Walker users gain greater stability as they can lean on the walkers as they step forward; the Walker provides a stable base. Each time the user takes a step, the user needs to lift the Walker, typically weighing only 5 to 7 lbs., and move it forward.
Should I buy a Rollator (Rolling Walker) or Walker?
Rollators users are on-the-go and just need a little support. Traditional Walkers users need extra support and generally move at a slower pace.
