Does Medicare Pay for wheelchair cushions?

Medicare will pay for 80% of a wheelchair’s cost if you meet Medicare’s “medical necessity” regulations. Call 1800MEDICARE to see if you are eligible for Medicare to reimburse you for your wheelchair (If approved Medicare will pay up to 80%.  We do not accept Medicare or any Insurance as payment. 

Some of the requirements that Medicare needs for approval are

• Medicare must have the wheelchair cushion’s make and model number you will be buying. They also require the supplier to submit to Medicare the make, model, serial number, and date of purchase of the wheelchair the cushion will be matched to.
• The Medicare beneficiary must have a skin ulcer or previous history on record of a pressure sore on file.  Medicare will not pay for “preventative measures”. 
• Full documentation from the attending physician on the pressure sore on the treatment, positioning requirements including chart notes of the skin ulcer from your physician. 

Wheelchair cushion Buying Guide

When buying a wheelchair cushion here are four things to look for: 

Comfort - Comfort cushions are basic foam cushions for users that are sitting for a short period (under an hour a day) and are not susceptible to skin breakdown or ulcers. Foam cushions will make your sitting and ride more comfortable. 

Support - If you will be sitting in the wheelchair for longer than an hour a day you will want a cushion with some support, be it a cushion rigidizer, or a firm or memory foam cushion. This will spread the pressure along the bottom of your butt and help the blood to flow freely.  There are also  position cushions for users with posture challenges. 

Prevention - Prevention cushions Are cushions that are for users that sit for an extended time and/or are highly susceptible to skin breakdown these cushions should be researched with the help of a Doctor or an OT  (you can also call us at 1-800-320-7140 to talk to a wheelchair specialist) these are cushions that will support your bottom, distribute and relieve the pressure of parts or the entire buttocks.

Anti Sweat - Sweating occurs when you sit for long periods. Sitting in your sweat is uncomfortable and can cause the skiing to start breaking down. We want to try and keep the skin nice and dry. If you are experiencing sweating while sitting in your wheelchair you should invest in a wheelchair cushion that has anti-sweat properties like gel,  foam infused gel, and air. The Gel acts as a coolant to lower the hot temperature that turns into moist. 

Waterproof - If a  user is incontinent and the likelihood of wetting the cushion is high there are breathable/waterproof cushion covers for sale that will accommodate any cushion size and width stopping your cushion does not retain the urine or any fluids that may come from the body. 

Are Wheelchair Cushions returnable?

If a wheelchair cushion  arrives damaged will send you a new cushion., Unfortunately,  once your cushion is used we cannot accept returns due to hygiene. Please See the individual wheelchair cushion return policy.
