Utilizing advanced composite materials, cutting-edge construction methods and years of research, Topolino has unveiled the CarbonCore Wheelchair Wheel, one of the lightest of its kind on the market today. Roughly 20% lighter than most comparable wheels, the CarbonCore set is also incredibly durable and is composed of tough carbon spoke fibers that pass through the wheel hub and span the full diameter of the wheel, reducing spoke stresses and providing the user with a safe, comfortable ride.
Furthermore, the rim is engineered to maintain perfect spoke alignment, eliminating the potential for flex and movement, thereby removing the most common source of spoke failure that users may experience with conventional wheelchair wheels.
With a weight capacity of 250 lbs., the 20-spoke WX2.5 wheels provide the user with superior efficiency, enabling increased mobility with a significantly lower level of fatigue. The reduced stress also decreases the risk of muscular deterioration in the arms and shoulders, a common problem for wheelchair users.
The spokes are constructed using a hybrid design of Kevlar fibers alongside carbon ones, all within a thermoplastic resin matrix. The carbon fibers provide superior stiffness, while the Kevlar adds tremendous toughness and durability. Topolino's composite spoke material is stronger than a 14g stainless steel spoke and is only one-fifth the weight. The wheels remove easily for convenient transport and also provide the user with a much smoother ride, dampening much of the road's vibration before it reaches the user.
Finally, the spokes and hub are built as modular "wheel halves" that are laced to the rim in a conventional fashion. This means that, if a wheel does become damaged (in a crash, for instance), the individual parts are all replaceable using conventional tools and the wheel may be easily rebuilt to live again.
